The magic and power is in the heart of the delicate and beautiful Amate paper, which natives believe has the power to connect them directly with God.
Amate paper is made from the bark of trees. Natives first ask permission from the tree to take the bark, which is boiled then soaked overnight. It is then pounded into pulp using rocks in order to form the paper. There are many references to the making of Amate paper on line.
“Amate is a paper that has been hand made in Mexico since Pre Hispanic times. Amate paper was extensively produced and used for both communication, records and ritual during the Aztec Empire. Amate paper production has never completely died, nor did the rituals associated with it. It has remained strongest in the rugged mostly inaccessible mountain areas of Northern Puebla and Northern Veracruz States, with the small village of San Pablito in Puebla. “
